Doom Eternal is mostly alright. But overall it actually feels like a step back from Doom 2016. The platforming is okay, and the shorter arena sequences is a solid improvement, but the rest of the gameplay is generally less enjoyable than the previous setting due to extremely low ammo counts, more new sub weapons gimmicks like the chainsaw was in 2016, and an even greater focus on the much loathed glory kill mechanic. Most of which seems entirely designed for the sake of their new “puzzle monster” paradigm where many higher tier mobs will have very specific, and often extremely arbitrary, weaknesses to certain weapons mods like they’re a god damn megaman baddie and the mooks really are just there to be killed by your sub weapons for health armor/ammo/armor refills. Plus, for a series that once started with a scene that was meant to proudly proclaim “fuck the story” it sure has crawled up it’s own ass with it’s plotline. It evens go so far as to have actual third person cut scenes and flashbacks in a few spots.
